Melty Savory Cheese Butter Sandwiches

Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
  • 1 teaspoon lemon pepper (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb narrow loaf unsliced bread (such as French)
  • 8 oz cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese, sliced into 1½-inch squares

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a small bowl, mix softened butter or margarine with basil, oregano, lemon pepper (if using), and minced garlic until well combined.
  • Slice the bread into 1-inch thick slices.
  • Spread the savory butter mixture generously on one side of each bread slice.
  • Place a piece of cheese between two buttered sides of bread slices to create sandwiches.
  • Wrap the stacked sandwiches tightly in aluminum foil to keep them moist while baking.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese has fully melted and the bread is warm.
  • Carefully unwrap and serve warm as a flavorful snack or side.
